Mixed Oxidant Solution (MOS) is a leading choice for secondary disinfection in hospitals, senior living communities, and healthcare facilities due to its ability to neutralize dangerous pathogens like Cryptosporidium and Legionella, the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease. It’s also an excellent solution for cooling tower water treatment, often replacing the need for harsh and costly biocides.
Unlike traditional disinfectants such as standard chlorine, mixed oxidants are highly effective at penetrating and destroying microbial contaminants hidden within biofilms—protective layers that allow harmful bacteria to thrive. When basic chlorination falls short, MOS offers a more robust disinfection approach, improving safety, enhancing water quality, and even contributing to better taste and odor.
MOS also stands out for its simplicity and safety. It uses only common salt as a precursor, eliminating the need for hazardous chemicals. Laboratory research has consistently demonstrated that at the same dosage and contact time as conventional chlorine, mixed oxidants achieve faster and more complete microbial inactivation across a broader range of organisms.
Secondary Disinfection Systems proudly offers advanced, cost-effective secondary disinfection solutions powered by MIOX Corporation technologies.
MIOX RIO Zuni™
- Free Available Chlorine (FAC) Output: >1.0 lb/day (0.45 kg/day)
- Ideal for secondary disinfection and cooling tower treatment, the RIO Zuni™ system significantly reduces the need for dangerous biocides—by up to 95%. It delivers 1.0 to 2.0 lb/day of mixed oxidant solution (MOS) with the equivalent effect of 100% free chlorine.
- Compact and user-friendly, the RIO Zuni™ is low maintenance (less than 3 hours every 6 months) and supports hard water conditions up to 170 mg/L. It includes options for built-in brine tanks and remote monitoring, and can be retrofitted to existing infrastructure for easy integration.
MIOX AE Series
- FAC Output: 4 – 8 lbs/day (1.8 – 3.6 kg/day)
- The AE Series is designed for healthcare facilities and industrial applications. Its ability to reduce chemical and biocide use by up to 95% makes it both environmentally and economically advantageous.
- The unit is available as a skid-mounted or standalone system and activates automatically when oxidant levels in the storage tank drop. Once connected to water and power, the only regular upkeep is adding salt to the brine tank.
MIOX Self-Cleaning VAULT™
- FAC Output: 15–60 lbs/day (6.8–27.2 kg/day)
- The VAULT™ system offers unmatched reliability and nearly maintenance-free operation. Designed for high-capacity, low-cost performance, it features a corrosion-resistant cabinet, air-cooled power supply, and user-friendly touchscreen interface.
- It supports seamless upgrades between sodium hypochlorite and mixed oxidants and is available in wall-mounted or skid-mounted formats. Multiple units can be combined to achieve unlimited disinfection capacity.
MIOX RIO™ M Series
- FAC Output: 60–300 lbs/day (27.2–136.1 kg/day)
- Housed in heavy-duty HDPE enclosures, the RIO M Series is designed for mid-size applications with scalable output. Systems are modular, allowing expansion up to five cells per cabinet without increasing the footprint.
- Operated by Allen Bradley MicroLogix 1200 controls, it features self-adjusting brine pumps and minimal acid requirements for cleaning calcium buildup. Multiple systems can be operated in tandem for higher capacity.
MIOX RIO Grande™
- FAC Output: >1,000 lbs/day (>454 kg/day)
- Built for large-scale water, wastewater, and industrial treatment, the RIO Grande™ can handle flows of 50 million gallons per day (MGD) and beyond.
- With a robust metal-framed enclosure and state-of-the-art cell design, it offers top-tier salt and power efficiency. The system uses Allen Bradley MicroLogix 1200 automation, and converting from hypochlorite to mixed oxidants is simple—just swap the cells.
MIOX oxCell™

- FAC Output: 15 lbs/day (6.8 kg/day)
- The oxCell™ is a next-generation electrolytic cell for upgrading existing MIOX systems. It improves chlorine production while cutting salt and energy consumption.
- Designed for fast, straightforward installation, it includes all necessary components—software, hardware, and conversion parts—for qualified systems.
MIOX BPS™ Brine Pump System
- FAC Output: 0.5 PPD (0.2 kg/day)
- Lightweight and fully portable, the BPS™ Brine Pump System is ideal for emergency response and field use. It produces fresh disinfectant in seconds and runs on 12V DC, solar power, or standard AC inputs (110V or 220V).
