Copper-silver ionization systems are designed to safeguard patients and clients in healthcare facilities, nursing homes, hotels, large buildings, and schools by preventing bacterial growth in potable and utility water distribution systems. The CDC recognizes copper-silver ionization as a viable secondary disinfection method.

How Is a Copper-Silver Ionization System Sized?
The sizing of CSI systems depends on factors such as water consumption, temperature, system age, water chemistry, and plumbing design. The process begins with an engineering site visit and the completion of a CSI datasheet, which details the unique characteristics of your facility’s water system. Using this data, CSI engineers customize the system components to meet your facility’s specific water demands.

How Do Copper-Silver Ionization Systems Function?
Copper-silver ionization is a non-chemical water treatment technology considered one of the most clinically effective solutions for preventing and remediating waterborne pathogens. It introduces positively charged copper and silver ions into the water through a byproduct-free process, targeting negatively charged bacteria and pathogens in the plumbing infrastructure. Copper ions weaken bacterial cell walls, while silver ions trigger lysis (cell death). The system delivers copper ions at 0.1–0.8 ppm (Cu2+) and silver ions at 30–80 ppb (Ag+), levels that circulate through the plumbing to combat pathogens and remain well below the EPA’s maximum limits of 1.3 ppm for copper and 100 ppb for silver. Ion levels should be regularly monitored, and we offer user-friendly options, from manual to inline testing. Importantly, installing a copper-silver ionization system typically does not require evacuating the facility, unlike some other treatment methods for specific populations.
