How does the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) function for secondary disinfection?
Advanced Oxidation Processes generate hydroxyl radicals, which are highly effective at eliminating pathogens. These radicals degrade organic pollutants into carbon dioxide (CO2), water, and salts. Typically, AOP produces hydroxyl radicals by integrating methods such as ozone, chlorine, or a chemical oxidant with an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system. The primary advantage of AOP is its ability to break down nearly all organic compounds without transferring pollution to another phase.
Applications of Advanced Oxidation Process:
Combining hydrogen peroxide with UV offers a robust method for pathogen elimination in surface or groundwater. Various AOPs can be tailored to target specific pollutants. For instance, Photo-Fenton is effective for neutralizing toxic compounds in industrial wastewater. While AOPs are powerful disinfectants, they have drawbacks. These processes are often complex, involving intricate chemistry to address specific contaminants and requiring precise dosing regimens. Additionally, AOP systems generally entail higher initial capital costs and ongoing operational and maintenance expenses.
