Chlorine (CL2) eliminates pathogens by disrupting molecular bonds, making it a highly effective and cost-efficient disinfectant. As a highly reactive element, CL2 readily interacts with other substances, targeting the chemical bonds in Legionella’s enzymes. Upon contact, chlorine replaces hydrogen atoms in these enzymes, altering their structure and causing them to break down or deform, which ultimately destroys the Legionella bacteria.

However, while chlorine is affordable and widely available, it struggles to penetrate biofilm. Alternatives like Chlorine Dioxide, Mixed Oxidant Solution (MOS – MIOX), and Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) are more effective at eliminating and preventing biofilm formation.
