Legionella grows fastest between 68 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit, so the recirculating hot water loops carry most of the risk and get treated first. ClO₂ has an advantage here: because one generator feeds multiple dosage points without an external storage tank, extending treatment to the cold water side means adding injection points and chemical volume rather than a second system. It makes sense when sampling finds Legionella in cold lines, when the building has long low-flow cold runs, or when a health department asks for it. Buildings that do not need it are better served pairing hot water ClO₂ with point of entry filtration or UV.

What does installation cost?

We do not install internally. Your mechanical contractor handles the plumbing tie-in and electrical work, and we stay involved to confirm the equipment goes in correctly and gets commissioned once water is flowing through it. What about chlorite and chlorate byproducts?

They are monitored against EPA limits of 0.8 mg/L for chlorine dioxide and 1.0 mg/L for chlorite. That monitoring is included in the annual cost.

Chlorine dioxide is an oxidant, and oxidants leave something behind. ClO₂ breaks down to chlorite and, to a lesser degree, chlorate. The EPA sets a maximum residual disinfectant level of 0.8 mg/L for chlorine dioxide and a maximum contaminant level of 1.0 mg/L for chlorite, and a properly dosed system stays under both while still holding an effective residual at the far fixtures.
